Australia National Flag History:

A design chosen in 1901 in a flag competition was won by five Australians which included two teenagers, and a New Zealand man, who submitted almost identical designs. The original flag design was changed several times and adopted as Australia's National Flag in 1954.

The three elements of the Australia National Flag are the Union Jack, representing the links with Great Britian, the Southern Cross which represents Australia's geography, and the Commonwealth Star, representing the unity of the six states and the territories of Australia.
